It’s not uncommon to enroll in Shopify’s 14-day trial, selecting a brand name, setting up your online store and then having second thoughts.
Maybe you find a better niche or come up with a better name.
Or maybe you just want to re-brand your store.
Luckily, this is possible without having to create a new Shopify store from scratch or having to open a new account. You can change most of the brand settings and store appearance within the settings.
Here’s what you can and can’t do:
1) You CAN’T change your Shopify Subdomain
As far as I know it’s not possible to change your Shopify subdomain. This is the subdomain you create when setting up your store.
For example: “xyz.myshopify.com”
The only way to change the built in Shopify subdomain is to open a new account and start a new store from scratch. But luckily there’s multiple workarounds to completely re-brand your existing store.
2) Change your Shopify custom domain
Inside of Shopify you can set up a custom domain for your store. This will overwrite Shopify’s built in subdomain for the most part. You can either buy a custom domain directly from within Shopify or you can use a service like GoDaddy.com to buy your custom domain.
This will overwrite your xyz.myshopify.com subdomain.
And instead you can buy any available domain name you want. So once you’ve decided on your new store name, just buy a custom domain that represents the store name and set it up in Shopify.
So although your subdomain is xyz.myshopify.com, nobody will actually see that. Instead they’ll see your custom domain.
3) Change the store name in the settings
Additionally to the custom domain, you also have to change the actual store name within the Shopify settings. This is the name that appears in the browser and in outgoing emails and so forth.
Obviously, you don’t want email notifications to include your old store name and you don’t want that to show up for any of your customers.
So in the settings, simply change the name of your store.
This is simple and will only take a few seconds.
By getting a custom domain and changing the name of your store within the Shopify settings, you can literally re-brand your store as many times as you want to, without opening a new account.
