When it comes to buying your custom domain for Shopify you have two options. You can either buy the domain on a third party site like GoDaddy or you can register the domain directly within Shopify.
Let’s talk about the pros and cons of both options.
1) Buy your domain on GoDaddy
The benefit of buying your domain on a site like GoDaddy is that usually you pay less. So if you want to save money then GoDaddy might be your best bet since Shopify domains cost a bit more.
However, on GoDaddy you have to edit the name servers and mess with the “DNS” records which might be confusing for some newbies.
If you’re a bit tech savvy and have used domains before, that’s fine.
And if you’re a complete noob when it comes to DNS settings and name servers, maybe sticking to Shopify is the best option for you.
2) Buy your domain inside of Shopify
Within Shopify there’s an option where you can buy a domain and they will register it for you and set everything up correctly. Shopify will also automatically request an SSL certificate for you which is required to encrypt your store whenever you accept credit card payments.
However, you can’t register all domain endings. So if you want a local domain ending like .de or .es or something exotic, you’ll have to use a third party service like GoDaddy to get those domain names.
At the end of the day both options are great.
I’ve used Shopify as well as third party services to buy domain names and it was straight forward in both cases. Buying the domains directly within Shopify always gave me less technical headaches though.
None of this is rocket science, it just needs to get done.
So ask yourself what’s more important: Saving money or having less technical headaches?
