Ever wondered how to create one click upsells for your e-commerce store?
I’ve been using one click upsells for many years. Back then almost nobody was using them and it certainly wasn’t a big thing in e-commerce. We’re talking about the days of OptimizePress and self-coded websites, when Clickfunnels and other fancy tools didn’t exist.
In the early days everyone was just creating sales pages that sold one single product.
So who invented one click upsells?
The History of One Click Upsells and Why Your Business Needs Them
It’s said that one of the first marketers to start using one click upsells was Mike Filsaime.
He discovered that his conversion rate was around 10-20 times higher after someone bought a product. So he realized that if he presented customers with a second offer immediately after their purchase, he could drastically increase his conversion rate and make a lot more money.
That’s how the infamous one click upsell was born.
Other marketers including Ryan Deiss and Perry Belcher from Digital Marketer took things to the next level when they started focussing heavily on Customer Value Optimization (CVO).
Instead of just selling one product, they started building entire sales funnels with multiple one click upsells and downsells. This boosted the average value of each transaction, automatically adding more profit to each sale without having to spend more money on advertising.
Later on tools like Samcart and Clickfunnels were developed to build these funnels more easily.
In fact, I built my very first one click upsell funnel with Samcart.
Here’s what the funnel looked like:
The day I deployed this funnel it literally doubled my business over night.
I’m not kidding here, that’s what a well crafted sales funnel can do to your business.
Let me explain why it worked so well.
Sales Funnels on Steroids: Combining Tripwire Offers with Multiple One Click Upsells
Around that time I also started using tripwire offers.
Tripwire offers are “irresistible” low-ticket offers. Basically you drop the price of a product so low that people would feel stupid not to buy it. The goal is to get as many people as possible into your funnel.
One form of early tripwire offer, which was used mainly by marketers to sell books, was the free plus shipping offer.
Free plus shipping offers have since been widely adopted in e-commerce and have reached mainstream status.
When I built my first drop shipping store nobody was using them.
Anyway, I use one click upsell funnels wherever I can these days because they just work.
For example, last year I created an insanely profitable funnel for celebrity music producer Anno Domini, which broke multiple industry records.
Here’s what the sales funnel looked like:
Simple, right?
All it consisted of was a sequence of one click upsells.
This “little” funnel generated over $35,000 in the first five days.
So let’s talk about how to create one click upsells and build your own funnels.
How to Create One Click Upsells for Your E-Commerce Store with These Two Methods
Whenever I have to build a complex funnel, I use Clickfunnels.
From all the marketing tools I’ve used in the past decade, it’s the most versatile and flexible one. You can build pretty much anything you can imagine, which is why I like it so much.
There are two ways you can use one click upsells in e-commerce:
- For specific sales and promotions
- For your e-commerce products in general
One of the best ways to use one click upsells is for holiday sales and special promotions like Black Friday.
These promotions are relatively straightforward because all you need to do is create a tripwire offer (give a massive discount for your best selling product or a bundle of products) and then pair it with a multi-step one click upsell funnel.
This is exactly what I did for the Anno Domini funnel above.
We sold a package of 100 beats (that have a combined value of multiple thousand dollars) for just $7 and then added multiple one click upsells for bigger packages costing $37, $27 and $17.
We built this funnel specifically for Black Friday.
People could only get the beat packages for five days and then we took everything offline.
This is what I mean when I talk about specific sales and promotions.
If you’re planning to create a one click upsell funnel for a special promotion such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Memorial Day or similar, I recommend you do that with Clickfunnels.
So let’s talk about how to pull it off.
Method 1: Creating One Click Upsell Funnels with Clickfunnels
How difficult is it?
Clickfunnels isn’t as beginner friendly as other tools (simply because you can do so much with it), but with a bit of experience and practice you can quickly learn how to create one click upsells and build all sorts of other landing pages.
Once you’ve signed up for Clickfunnels, simply create a new funnel.
I won’t walk you through the whole setup since this article focusses specifically on how to create one click upsells. But what you want to do is create a custom funnel with an “Order Form” page, one or multiple “One Click Upsell” pages and an “Order Confirmation” page.
Here’s an example of an upsell for a drop shipping product.
As you can see it’s pretty simple.
You don’t have to overcomplicate this whole thing.
On your upsell page, make sure you set up your “Yes” and “No” links correctly.
When a customer is presented with the offer, he or she can click on a button or link which will immediately charge the customer’s credit card and complete the purchase automatically (hence the name “one click upsell”).
Here’s how to create one click upsells by setting up a “Yes” button in Clickfunnels.
But you can also use regular links for one click upsells.
I usually like to combine them.
At the bottom of the page, add a “No” link for customers to skip the offer if they don’t want to purchase.
Here’s how this link needs to be set up.
That’s pretty much it.
As I said, I don’t want to turn this article into a full-blown Clickfunnels tutorial since it would quickly turn into a hundred page book. I recommend you play around and practice and learn as you go along.
So what about the second scenario?
What if you want to create one click upsells for your store in general?
Method 2: How to Create One Click Upsells with Shopify
Let’s talk about how you can use evergreen one click upsells on your e-commerce store. These one click upsells aren’t just for special sales or seasonal promotions but will remain on your store all year long.
For that, your best option is Shopify.
If you’re using another e-commerce platform I recommend you switch to Shopify because it’s the most robust and flexible platform that exists right now. Especially the app store makes Shopify superior to other platforms, because you can do virtually anything you want by installing the right Shopify app.
And one of these apps is One Click Upsell by Zippify.
It was developed by Ezra Firestone and it lets you create post-purchase upsells.
Once you get the app, you can hook it up with your Shopify store and start adding one click upsells. In order to do this, One Click Upsell bypasses Shopify’s standard checkout process (which unfortunately doesn’t allow post-purchase upsells) and replaces it with the app’s own checkout system that provides one click upsell functionality.
The upsells are created within the app’s dashboard.
You can use tags to determine which upsell will be shown after which products. I won’t get into too much detail regarding the entire setup since this article is already way too long.
But here’s what the app does:
As you can see above, the app will bypass Shopify’s built-in checkout system.
So your customers will be entering their shipping details and payment information in Zippify’s own checkout system, which has full post-purchase upsell functionality.
This is how to create one click upsells in Shopify.
Let’s summarize:
If you want to create time-limited, specific sales and promotions I recommend you use Clickfunnels and build custom funnels. This will give you the most flexibility and allow you to create complex and extremely profitable one click upsell funnels.
If you want to increase your store’s revenue in general by adding evergreen one click upsells to existing products, you can do that with Shopify and the One Click Upsell app by Zippify.
Let me know in the comments which type of one click upsells you’re planning to use 🙂
